How To Select a Exterior Fixture
|
|
Security & Shine
For the protection and safety of your family and quests, position security lighting near all pathways,
doorways, and entryways. When illuminating a porch or doorway, consider the height of your lighting
fixtures before installing the outlet box. If the outlet box is positioned to high, the fixtures
may hit the soffit.
Spotlights
Spotlighting is an excellent attention grabber for special outdoor subjects such as unusual landscaping
or statuary. Use spots for dark corners, aim them so as not to glare in the eyes of those entering the
driveway or neighbors windows. The general rule is to aim spots or floods at a 45-degree angle, directed
downward. They should be placed on the underside of the eaves so they are not in the line of vision. Use
several to overlap lighting and avoid shadows. Douple and triple spots can be used at each outlet, thus
reducing the number of outlets needed.
Post Lanterns, Wall Lanterns, & Hanging Lights
Plan on post lanterns, wall lanterns and hanging lights at, or above eye level for the entrance way, also
low downlights along walkways.
Other Outdoor Lighting Areas
Besides steps and walkways, lighting is needed for back and side porches, entries and outbuildings and
utility areas.
Patios
Place matching wall brackets on either side of or above the exit from the house onto the patio. If your
yard is large, position wall brackets along the fence or place post lights around the perimeter to
enhance the spaciousness of the grounds and provide soft illumination on moonless evenings.
